The Perfect Mashup: Cheesesteak Meets French Bread

A classic Philly cheesesteak is known for its tender, seasoned steak, melted cheese, and sautéed vegetables—all served on a soft hoagie roll. This recipe takes all those iconic flavors and elevates them by layering them on a crispy loaf of French bread. The result? A dish that’s easier to share, more substantial, and just as mouthwatering.

What You’ll Need

Here’s everything you need to create this hearty dish:

  • French Bread Loaf: Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and the perfect base for all your toppings.
  • Steak: Thinly sliced ribeye or sirloin works best for that authentic Philly flavor.
  • Onions and Bell Peppers: Sautéed to tender perfection, these add a delicious sweetness and crunch.
  • Cheese: Provolone or American cheese melts beautifully for that gooey, cheesy finish.
  • Seasonings: Salt, pepper, and a touch of garlic powder to enhance the flavor.
  • Butter or Olive Oil: For sautéing the vegetables and toasting the bread.

How to Make Philly Cheesesteak French Bread

  1. Prepare the Bread: Slice the French bread loaf lengthwise and hollow out the center.
  2. Cook the Steak: Thinly slice your steak and cook it in a hot skillet with a touch of oil. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. I also used steak seasoning.
  3. Sauté the Vegetables: In the same skillet, sauté sliced onions and bell peppers until soft and caramelized.
  4. Assemble: Spread the cooked steak and vegetables evenly over the toasted French bread. Top generously with slices of cheese.
  5. Bake: Pop the assembled loaf into the oven and bake until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  6. Slice and Serve: Cut into pieces and serve immediately for a meal that’s guaranteed to disappear fast!

I also like to put mayo on my bread before the meat and cheese to give it a rich flavor.

Pro Tips for the Best Cheesesteak French Bread

  • Use Fresh Bread: A good-quality French loaf makes all the difference.
  • Get the Right Steak: Thinly sliced ribeye or sirloin is ideal for tender, flavorful meat.
  • Customize the Toppings: Add mushrooms, hot peppers, or even a drizzle of cheese sauce for extra flair.
