Making Waffle House Waffles at Home (And Better Than the Restaurant!)

Let me take you back to a cozy Saturday morning. The house is quiet, the sun peeks through the blinds, and the smell of freshly brewed coffee fills the kitchen. That’s when I had a craving for something special—waffles. But not just any waffles—Waffle House waffles.

Now, if you’ve ever been to Waffle House, you know they’ve got that waffle magic down. Golden, slightly crispy on the outside, and soft and fluffy on the inside. But I thought to myself, “What if I could make them even better at home?”

So, I headed to the kitchen and got to work. I wanted to recreate that iconic flavor and texture, but with a homemade twist that would blow the restaurant version out of the water. Here’s how I did it.

The Quest for the Perfect Waffle

It all started with finding the right ingredients. Waffle House waffles have a unique texture that comes from using a batter that’s rich but light. After some trial and error (and a lot of waffle eating!), I discovered that the secret lies in a few key components:

Shortening and letting the batter chill.

Step-by-Step: My Homemade Waffle House Waffles:

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 egg

1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

2 tablespoons butter, softened

2 tablespoons shortening

1/2 cup half & half

1/2 cup milk

1/4 cup buttermilk

1/4 teaspoon vanilla

  1. Combine flour, salt and baking soda in a medium bowl; stir to combine.
  2. Lightly beat egg in another medium bowl; add sugar, butter, and shortening and mix well with an electric mixer until smooth.
  3. Add half & half, milk, buttermilk and vanilla; mix well.
  4. Add the dry flour mixture to wet mixture while beating; mix until smooth.
  5. Cover and chill overnight or at least 1-2 hours before usage.

Making waffles: Rub a light coating of vegetable oil on a waffle iron; preheat waffle iron. Leave batter out of the refrigerator to warm up a bit. Spoon 1/3 to 1/2 cup of batter into waffle iron; cook for 3-4 minutes or until waffles are light brown.

This Recipe makes 6 waffles.

The Moment of Truth

As the waffles cooked, the house began to fill with that irresistible waffle smell. My kids started wandering into the kitchen, wondering what was going on. The waffle iron beeped, and I lifted the lid. There it was—my homemade Waffle House waffle, only better. Golden, crispy, with just the right amount of fluff.

But the real test? The taste.

I slathered on some butter, drizzled a little maple syrup, and took a bite. The slight crunch gave way to a soft, tender inside. It was everything I had hoped for—and more. My family devoured the entire batch, and we all agreed: these waffles had that Waffle House flavor but with a homemade warmth that made them even better.

Why They’re Better Than Waffle House Waffles

  • Fresh Ingredients: You can taste the difference when you use fresh ingredients like real buttermilk and butter.
  • Personal Touch: The ability to tweak the recipe to your liking—maybe a bit more vanilla or an extra dash of sugar.

Make Them Your Own

The best part of making waffles at home is that you can get creative! Want to add chocolate chips, fresh berries, or even a bit of cinnamon? Go for it! You can also whip up some homemade whipped cream or even top the waffles with fried chicken for a savory twist.

Final Thoughts

If you love Waffle House waffles, trust me—these homemade waffles are a must-try. They’ve got all the flavor you love, but with that extra homemade touch that takes them to the next level. Plus, they’re easy to make and perfect for a lazy weekend breakfast.

So, the next time you’re craving Waffle House waffles, skip the restaurant and head to your own kitchen. You won’t be disappointed!
